Back in the olden days, I wanted desperately to be a published author. I thought success meant having an agent and a big New York house pick my book out of a slush pile and bless it with their approval.

Honeymoon Cottage was the turning point for me. I got an agent–who told me the book would never sell. I got a lot of editors from big name publishers to look at the book–and they said no one would want a novel that was part mystery, part romance, and part a woman’s journey to find herself. Everyone was an expert, with suggestions for how to make the book more “commercial,” more “acceptable,” more “right for the market.”

I finally got so frustrated I decided to self-publish Honeymoon Cottage just as I’d written it before the experts got a hold of it. It sold more copies the first year than if I’d gotten that coveted publishing contract, and I’ve never looked back. I discovered how powerful readers are, and how they are the only ones who really matter in this business. They choose what they want to read, and now they are the only “experts” I listen to.

In the years since, Honeymoon Cottage became the first in the Pajaro Bay series, and eventually, I made it free, to introduce the series to even more people. You can get it HERE at no cost, and I hope you know it comes with my eternal gratitude.

So thank you. Thank you for reading my books. Thank you for taking a chance on an author who you’d never heard of, who didn’t have a famous name or a big publisher behind her, and who didn’t have fancy covers or a big advertising budget or a splashy high-concept gimmick. She just wanted to tell you a story about some people and their journey through life.

Thank you for allowing me to share the books of my heart with people all over the world. Thank you for keeping me going with your emails, and your reviews, and your purchases of my books. You will never know how much it means to me to share these stories with you.
